King Arthur’s Knights: Chivalry, Manuscripts, and Medieval Legacy
For more than seven centuries, the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table have shaped the literary imagination of the Western world. Preserved within extraordinary illuminated manuscripts, these stories became enduring expressions of courage, loyalty, justice, and honorable leadership.
This short film examines the Clermont-Tonnerre Grail, an early thirteenth century Arthurian manuscript presented by Christie’s. Written in Old French and illuminated by hand, the manuscript preserves the stories of King Arthur, Merlin, the Holy Grail, and the legendary knights whose ideals influenced generations of readers, artists, and historians.
Beyond its literary significance, the manuscript reflects the remarkable craftsmanship of medieval Europe and the enduring responsibility of preserving humanity’s cultural inheritance. Through libraries, museums, archives, and private stewardship, such works continue to connect the modern world with the intellectual traditions of the past.
At the McWhorter Foundation, we believe that every preserved manuscript is more than a historical document it is a bridge between generations, safeguarding the stories, values, and artistic achievements that define civilization.
